Working in Corrections: First Responder Behind the Walls

This week on Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast, we welcome our good friend, comedian and host of Rock Bottom 2 Recovery, Bill Farrell, back to the set. You may have caught him on our Friends in Recovery Podcast last week. Tonight, he is sharing with us a bit about his personal and professional background as a first responder.

Bill loves working as a Corrections Officer in Suffolk County/Boston Area of Massachusetts. He’s been in the profession for about 14 years since the age of 38, since he transitioned from working in construction (Laborers Local 223). However, he reminds us about how the unique challenges of the job are often overlooked by the general public.

Bill also serves as an Employee Assistance Professional, helping his colleagues and their families to process stress and promote mental health.

Can’t get enough of Bill? Check out his very own podcast: Rock Bottom 2 Recovery:

Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast: Episode 12. - Special Guest (Jeff Dill)

Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast: Episode 12. - Special Guest (Jeff Dill)

December 19, 2019
This week on Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast, Jersey Ed & the Podfather Mike Mikes welcome Jeff Dill to the show. Jeff is the Founder, CEO, and instructor at the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance.

A little about our guest today!

“In 2009, founder Jeff Dill, organized Counseling Services for Fire Fighters. CSFF was established based on the tragic events that surrounded Hurricane Katrina. When speaking with firefighters who returned after serving the community of New Orleans, he heard the pleas of firefighters who had a difficult time talking with counselors who did not have any firefighting experience. They became frustrated and never did seek the help they needed. It was CSFF mission to offer behavioral health workshops to support firefighters, train senior officers and educate clinicians on the benefits of understanding the life and emotions of firefighters. On 12/31/14, CSFF donated all of their intellectual property to FBHA.

In 2011, Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance was organized based on the decreasing funds available for training at the Fire Department level and the staggering number of firefighter suicides. FBHA was established to directly educate firefighters/ Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel and their families about behavioral health issues such as depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety and addictions, as well as firefighter suicides. Through businesses, community support and sponsorships, it is our hope that the workshops and services will be offered at low cost or no charge to those in need.

Jeff holds a Master’s degree and is a Licensed Counselor. He is a retired Captain from Palatine Rural Fire Protection District in Inverness, Illinois and is a member of the American Counseling Association and National Board of Certified Counselors.

Jeff Dill, and those working with FBHA, are dedicated to educating firefighters and emergency service personnel on the importance of behavioral health and suicide awareness.”

Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast: Episode 10. - Special Guest (Jon Sanders)

December 5, 2019

This week on Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast, Jersey Ed & the Podfather Mike Mikes welcome Jon Sanders of the Fire Inside Podcast to the set. Jon has been involved in the fire service as a firefighter/EMT for over 20 years. He is also the Lead Pastor of The RESCUE Church.

Our first patch has arrived! Thanks to Anthony Lancelotti from Providence, Rhode Island Fire Department. Send us a patch! We’d love to add it to the wall. Send us an email at help@friendsinrecoveyrpodcast.com

Jersey Ed’s Podcast Pick of the Week:
Your Oxygen Mask First - Host Erin Yeung is a wife, a mother, and a 9-1-1 Dispatcher. Her
podcast touches on topics in resiliency, mental health and wellness, and professional
development for public safety professionals.

First responder safety and prevention trainings are so important. You wear your body armor, your protective gear, etc. - but what protects your mind?

Our special guest Jon Sanders joins us from Sioux Falls Fire Rescue of South Dakota. He shares that we have made huge progress in protecting ourselves physically, but have a long way to go in terms of protecting our mind and spirit. The culture of the First Responder Community is complicated, since the same traits that lead us to the calling may also discourage us from addressing mental health concerns. Courageousness and independence serve us well on the job, but may prevent us from seeking help when we need it. Peer support enables First Responders to take the first step, to acknowledge that it’s okay not to be okay, and to start the conversation that leads to healing.

“Do you know why God created firefighters? So cops can have heroes, too!”

If you are in recovery, Jersey Ed recommends checking out Episode 51: Surrounded by Sleepwalkers of the Fire Inside Podcast.
