Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast: Episode 10. - Special Guest (Jon Sanders)

December 5, 2019

This week on Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast, Jersey Ed & the Podfather Mike Mikes welcome Jon Sanders of the Fire Inside Podcast to the set. Jon has been involved in the fire service as a firefighter/EMT for over 20 years. He is also the Lead Pastor of The RESCUE Church.

Our first patch has arrived! Thanks to Anthony Lancelotti from Providence, Rhode Island Fire Department. Send us a patch! We’d love to add it to the wall. Send us an email at help@friendsinrecoveyrpodcast.com

Jersey Ed’s Podcast Pick of the Week:
Your Oxygen Mask First - Host Erin Yeung is a wife, a mother, and a 9-1-1 Dispatcher. Her
podcast touches on topics in resiliency, mental health and wellness, and professional
development for public safety professionals.

First responder safety and prevention trainings are so important. You wear your body armor, your protective gear, etc. - but what protects your mind?

Our special guest Jon Sanders joins us from Sioux Falls Fire Rescue of South Dakota. He shares that we have made huge progress in protecting ourselves physically, but have a long way to go in terms of protecting our mind and spirit. The culture of the First Responder Community is complicated, since the same traits that lead us to the calling may also discourage us from addressing mental health concerns. Courageousness and independence serve us well on the job, but may prevent us from seeking help when we need it. Peer support enables First Responders to take the first step, to acknowledge that it’s okay not to be okay, and to start the conversation that leads to healing.

“Do you know why God created firefighters? So cops can have heroes, too!”

If you are in recovery, Jersey Ed recommends checking out Episode 51: Surrounded by Sleepwalkers of the Fire Inside Podcast.

Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast: Episode 9. - Special Guest (Tom Burruel)

Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast: Episode 9. - Special Guest (Tom Burruel)

November 28, 2019

This week on Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast, our friend Tom Burruel from Intervention 180 joins the Podfather Mike Miles & Jersey Ed. The guys love getting emails, photos, and patches from our followers - keep ‘em coming!

The mental health & wellness field is all about teamwork, just as it is for the First Responder community. We rely on our brothers and sisters to keep us going. Sometimes you are helping someone else, and sometimes you need a hand. It’s always okay to reach out for help.

First Responders witness events every day that cause cumulative stress. Compartmentalizing can help - but only up to a point. Eventually, that stress shows itself in expected and unexpected ways. Tom Burruel touches on the causes and symptoms of Somatic Pain in First Responders.

The guys discuss how individuals can transform their suffering by helping others through peer to peer programs or employee assistance programs. The Podfather shares some very personal details about his addiction, treatment, and early recovery. He found support in his loved ones and colleagues. By sharing his story by in 1988, the Podfather was able to offer some help to another officer who was struggling.

Individuals make a decision to accept help when the pain becomes greater than the fear of change. Help is available through peer officers, employee assistance programs, and of course, the Podfather & Jersey Ed. Don’t go it alone.

Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast: Episode 8. - Special Guest (Dr. Beverly Anderson)

Answering the Call - The First Responder Podcast: Episode 8. - Special Guest (Dr. Beverly Anderson)

November 21, 2019

Tonight, Jersey Ed (Ed Chionchio Sr) & the Podfather Mike Miles are joined in the studio by friend and interventionist Tom Burruel, Founder of Intervention 180 in Boise, Idaho. Producer Sweets is also an interventionist as well as the author of the book, Loving Lions: A guide for families struggling with addiction. The guys discuss why interventions may not always go as planned, but they succeed in impacting the dynamics of a family unit for the better.

Jersey Ed shares some interesting statistics:

There are 900,000 police officers currently in the United States.

The best state to be a cop is New York. Massachusetts, where we film Answering the Call, is Number 8 on the list.

The area with the most law enforcement officers per capita is Washington, DC - where our special guest Dr. Beverly Anderson works.

The Top 5 Best Cities for Law Enforcement (based on salary, cost of living, and location): Trenton, NJ, New York, NY, Miami, FL, Los Angeles, CA, & Atlantic City, NJ.

Our special guest is Dr. Beverly Anderson, Clinical Director & Administrator for DC Metropolitan Police EAP. MEAP is a free-standing (and free) confidential counseling program for police officers, police officials, and their family members. She shares over 30 years of profound experience in helping the law enforcement community.

Dr. Anderson urges cities and police departments to care for officers at all times, and not just when current events call for reactionary measures. Topics in law enforcement mental health and wellness deserve to be part of an on-going conversation, so that we can support and prepare these officers BEFORE the critical incidents and compassion fatigue occur. It's not an event, it's a process.
